Basic knowledge of NTC sensor

Q: What is the price of NTC sensors?
Answer: The price depends on the cost (precision, probe, wire, connector) and is related to the output. The more stringent the NTC resistance value is at the B value, the higher the unit price.

Q: How fast is NTC's response time?
Answer: The response time is defined as the time required to reach 62%, or a new temperature, as a function of quality. The smaller the sensor, the faster the response speed. The response speed of a separate sensor is faster than when it is encapsulated in a metal case. The typical response time of series I NTC thermistor sensors is <15 seconds.

Q: Is the size of NTC small?
Answer: The maximum outer diameter of epoxy-coated separable sensors is usually 0.95".
The maximum outer diameter of the miniature glass sensor is 0.15".

Q: How stable is the NTC sensor?
Answer: Different sensor series have different stability ratings. The stability of epoxy resin coated NTC is lower than that of sealed glass NTC sensor.

Q: How to choose the resistance value of NTC for the application?
Answer: Generally speaking, low resistance sensors used in low temperature applications. Use high-resistance sensors in high-temperature applications. The goal is to have a working resistance value within the temperature range you are interested in.

Q: Can NTC be used in low temperature applications?
Answer: Yes, but at -200°C, the accuracy is based on mathematical modeling.

Q: What is the price range of NTC?
Answer: The price depends on the cost and is related to the output. The stricter the accuracy, the lower the output.

Q: What is the difference between a thermistor and an RTD?
Answer: There are 5 distinct technologies in the production of temperature sensor products. Each technology has its advantages and disadvantages, and which technology is best for a particular application will depend on a number of factors, including temperature range, required accuracy, time response, cost, and many other factors. It is best to understand the application of the product as much as possible to determine which product or technology is most suitable for the customer.

Q: Will NTC be short-circuited?
When the loop current is higher than Imax, or the rated power is higher than Pmax for a long time, the temperature of the thermistor will be higher than Tmax. At the beginning, the thermistor will have a fairly low resistance, and then the thermistor will be burned, causing a short circuit or an open circuit.

Q: Is the NTC open/damaged?
When a huge instantaneous current is applied to the thermistor, the product may not be able to withstand it and may be damaged. Usually, it shows high impedance or direct open circuit.

Q: What is the offset resistance of NTC?
NTC thermistor is a semiconductor element sensitive to heat. If IR reflow and rework exceed a certain temperature and time, the thermistor is easily damaged, resulting in anti-offset. Resistance can be increased or decreased

Question: Does the accuracy of NTC sensors include long-term resistance changes (resistance stability)?
Answer: No, the specified accuracy is the accuracy of the sensor when it leaves the factory. When used in the field, the sensor will be affected by the application or environmental conditions, which cannot be controlled.

Q: What does "%" mean when it comes to the accuracy of NTC sensors?
Answer: The sensor accuracy can be specified as resistance tolerance, or temperature accuracy at a certain point or within a certain span. For example: the accuracy is ± 0.2°C from 0°C to 70°C

Q: Can you explain in more detail about the sensitivity of the resolution? Why the higher the value, the better?
Answer: High sensitivity can eliminate any wire resistance. It can also simplify the auxiliary electronic circuit. A 10,000 ohm thermistor has a temperature change of 1°C, and a resistance change of 4.4% or 440 ohms. The temperature of the 100 ohm platinum sensor changes by 1°C, and the resistance changes by 1/3 ohm.

Q: What part of the Y-axis represents the stability?
Answer: The Y axis is deliberately drawn, and there are no actual numbers on the scale. The aging rate will vary depending on the formulation and external dimensions.
